Hoya davidcummingii Ø7cm

Hoya davidcummingii is a compact wax plant with small, fleshy, glossy leaves that flowers while young in rounded umbels of pink-magenta stars with a paler crown. The waxy, porcelain-like clusters give off a fine fragrance, stronger in the evening. It can be trained onto a support or left to trail. Pet- and child-friendly, easy to grow with bright indirect light. Care instructions The good news is that Hoya davidcummingii is a forgiving plant that responds quickly to attention. It grows steadily in the warm season, lengthening its stems and thickening its clump, and with a suitable support it can become within a few years a generous presence, upright or trailing as you train it. Nothing it asks for is complicated - it is simply a plant that thrives when you respect its epiphyte's rhythm: plenty of light, infrequent but thorough waterings, and a substrate that breathes. A well-tended wax plant is among the longest-lived of indoor companions, so it is worth learning from the start the few pointers below, gathered in one place: Light: bright but indirect light. An east- or west-facing window filtered through a sheer curtain is perfect, and a few hours of gentle morning sun even help flowering. Keep the leaves from the direct, scorching midday rays, which can singe them; too little light, on the other hand, stops flowering and overly stretches the stems. Temperature: it is happiest between 18 and 28 °C, exactly the warm comfort of a home. It favours steady temperatures and flowers best in warmth; in winter keep it from cold draughts by the window and from freezing air, and if the thermometer drops well below 15 °C move it to a warmer room. Watering: let the substrate dry out well between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away completely. The fleshy leaves store water, so the plant prefers to sit a little dry rather than too wet; excess water in the pot is the only thing that can truly upset it. In winter, when growth slows, water noticeably less often. Humidity: it appreciates slightly humid air, around 50-60%, but tolerates the drier atmosphere of a home well thanks to its fleshy leaves. In very dry rooms you can group it with other plants or set it on a tray of pebbles and water. Avoid misting directly on the flowers and open clusters. Substrate: a very loose, airy, fast-draining mix - ideally a wax-plant or orchid blend with bark, perlite and coco fibre, which mimics the tree bark it grows on in nature. A pot with drainage holes is essential. Feeding: in the growing season, from spring to autumn, feed every 2-4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength; during flowering, a feed richer in phosphorus encourages the clusters. Stop feeding in winter. Propagation: very easy from stem cuttings. Cut a segment with one or two nodes and at least a pair of leaves, let the cut dry for a few hours, then place it in water or straight into loose, moist substrate; keep it warm and bright, and within a few weeks you will have a new plant - the simplest way to fill your sill or to pass a specimen on. If small signals appear, do not be discouraged - they are easy to read, not obstacles. Soft, yellowing leaves usually betray excess water at the root, so check the drainage and water less often; wrinkled, thinned leaves say the opposite, that the plant has stayed dry too long and is asking for a drink. A lack of flowers almost always means too little light - move it closer to the window and be patient until the warm season. And if small pests appear on the fleshy leaves, a gentle wipe with a damp cloth and a natural treatment quickly settles the matter. All these adjustments are minor, and the plant responds to them promptly, resuming its growth as soon as conditions settle back into place. With these few pointers, Hoya davidcummingii becomes a lasting companion and a natural gateway into the world of wax plants. Once you have mastered this one, your eye will inevitably wander to the heart-shaped miniatures of a Hoya kerrii 'I Love You' or to the fine trailing curtains of a Hoya curtisii - and so begins a passion that lasts a lifetime.
